The First Post

It would be logical, I think, for the First Post in a new Blog to seek to set out the writer's programme, philosophy, etc, and generally to justify yet another addition to a crowded blogosphere.

On the other hand, today's stories on the BBC site include:

• De Menezes Police won't face homicide but may face Health & Safety charges
• Lord Hattersley (what is it about that phrase ?) calls on Tony Blair to quit soon despite his being "instinctively honest"
• Vladimir Putin finds it 'colonialist' for people to wonder how democratic is Russia
• Lord Levy's lawyer has difficulty seeing why his client might be arrested re the loans-for-peerages stories
• The Government's new Guide to the Constitution for schools can't even get an MP's constituency right - or the spin plausible when this is pointed out to them.

In those circumstances, the better question may be - how can one not write a blog ? As Juvenal put it, difficile est bloggum non scribere (Satires I, 30).
